Everyday Words in Maori
Designer and Modelmaker: Jo Litchfield
Maori translation by Huia Publishers
Huia Publishers, 2009, 48pp, soft cover
This fabulous picture/translation book is perfect to help people of all ages learn Maori words.
Everything from family relationships to common grocery items to parts of the body are covered in this book, beautifully illustrated with clay models.
Each 2-page spread features a situation like the kitchen in a house, with items from that situation also shown around the edges of the pages, with their Maori name alongside. Numbers, shapes, colours etc are also included. You get the benefit of being able to look at the object and the Maori word together, greatly assisting in word recognition.
If you still can't figure out what the Maori word means, there's a handy Maori/English list of words in the book.
I think all new immigrants to New Zealand should have this book, and it would make a great resource book in homes and schools for both children and adults.
