This greenstone mere necklace is made from genuine Ngai Tahu pounamu, sourced from the Hokitika area.
The mere is beautifully carved on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand. The necklace represents the pre-European artefact used both as a club and a tradeable taonga (treasure). Spiritually, the Maori mere design represents power and authority, so it makes a great gift for someone you hold in high esteem.
The necklace measures approximately 5.6cm long, and hangs from a long black adjustable cord, so you can sit it where you want on your chest. The hei mere in the photo is made from Kawakawa pounamu, a greenstone named after the native Kawakawa tree, and coloured mid to dark green.
The mere necklace comes to you with a card containing a link to a website, where you can find details about the pounamu rock your necklace came from, and who carved it.
